International Internships

An excellent way to gain international and cultural experience is to spend time living or working abroad.  One way to accomplish this is to complete an internship in a foreign country, which provides both professional experience as well as an added cultural dimension and understanding of international business.  In addition, completing an international internship exemplifies the individual's ability to adapt and succeed in international situations - an essential attribute for those wishing to pursue international careers.

The program that allows French young professionals to complete an internship in the United States is known as the J-1 visa program.  Minimum eligibility requirements include English proficiency and international insurance.  Within the program, there are two specific tracks:

- Internship program: for students currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, or individuals who have graduated from one in the past 12 months; 12-month maximum duration

- Trainee program: individuals who have already completed a degree from a post-secondary institution and have one year of relevant work experience; 18-month maximum duration

For American young professionals interested in completing an internship in France, there is the American Trainee Program (ATP).  To be eligible for this short-term work experience, individuals must be between 18 and 35 years of age and either enrolled in or have a diploma from a post-secondary institution.  Applicants to this program can complete the ATP anywhere in France.  However, Minneapolis' sister city is Tours, where the FACCMN has preexisting contacts.
